Four stores is $111,920 per year, the same store four times over. That is the part of your retail labor cost nobody planned, nobody approved and nobody can point to on a floor. And it is not the whole bill, because the associates carrying it are the ones who always say yes, so they are the ones who quit, and you replace them while running short.

What causes overtime in retail? Seven moments, and nobody is counting

What causes overtime in retail is seven ordinary moments in a normal week, and one thing they share: nothing is counting anybody's hours while the hours are being created. None of these is somebody being careless. Each one is a person asked to hold a running total in their head while the floor is busy.

The spreadsheet is the first culprit. A grid of names and times cannot add anybody up. It has no idea the person in the Tuesday cell is already in four other cells. It will let you type a 46 hour week and it will look as neat as a 34 hour week.

Read the last row again, because it decides the other six.
